Ethical golf travel

Eco travel is a growing business and our friends and experts in golf travel have a fresh approach to ethical golf travel…

The many thousands of flights taken around the world each year in the name of golf leave a large and significant carbon footprint on the environment. With so many golfers living in climates that are unsuitable for the sport throughout most of the year, it is perhaps inevitable that many of them will seek to travel to sunnier destinations to indulge their sporting passion. But there are ways that even the most eager golf travellers can reduce their impact on the environment.

Here are some of the ways golfers can make their sport more environmentally friendly:

Play closer to home
If you’re based in Europe, you’re never far from a golf course. So, while it might be tempting for British golfers to hop on a budget airline flight to Spain or Portugal to play golf in the Mediterranean sun, they should first take a look at the extensive range of UK golf breaks available all year round, taking in courses in beautiful areas like the Lake District, Scotland and the Yorkshire Dales. When the weather is right, the courses available in the UK can compete with the best in the world.

Take a ferry
When it comes to golf Europe is hard to beat. But with so many of the continent’s best golf resorts concentrated in such close proximity to each other, there is rarely a real need to take a fuel-guzzling flight from one place to another. Ferry services connect Britain and Scandinavia with mainland Europe and the intercontinental train and bus services are excellent. Save yourself the expense of booking your clubs onto a plane by planning a more adventurous golfing trip across Europe and do your travelling closer to the ground.

Carbon offset your flights
Certain golf resorts are just plain tough to reach without taking a flight. But if you’re jetting off to Australia or China with your golf bag, take a moment to think about carbon offsetting. This involves working out the levels of emissions and greenhouse gases that are generated by your flights, and then paying organisations whose work offsets those emissions through the creation of green energy and planting trees.

Walk the course
Finally, while you’re out on the course, be sure to enjoy a good walk. Golf carts might not be in the same league as cars when it comes to harmful emissions, but they do nevertheless produce carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and other gasses. So save the environment and give yourself some enjoyable exercise in the process!
