These 16 photos come from our horse riding school in Lanjaron, Spain. So, go ahead, feast your eyes on the regions seriously stunning scenery (and majestic horses!):
The trekking
Over the course of seven days, riders depart on four full-day treks through the breathtaking Sierra Nevada Mountains, staying overnight in a mountain cottage for three nights. From easy to challenging trails, days are spent in the saddle surrounded by panoramic vistas of the countryside and views across the water to Africa on very clear days.
The treks follow old Moorish mule paths and valleys where horses, mules or oxen are still used to pull the plough to harvest crops. These treks allow riders to not only discover the remarkable Andalucían scenery, but to immerse themselves in a culture where even today, tradition remains very much part of everyday life.
The horses
Andalucian breeds have been called the ‘best of horseflesh in the world’ and have a strong history in mountain ranges, making them the ideal companions for a trekking holiday. Plus, they’re gorgeous and very amiable, so it’s easy to build a great connection for the week.
The school has 16 horses, for beginner to advanced riders. Mainly the strong Andalucian breed, they are well-trained and love meeting new guests.
The location
The holiday base is a pretty Spanish farmhouse near the spa town of Lanjaron, though trekkers also stay in a charming mountain cottage. With a pool, bar, barbecue, and wifi, the farmhouse offers modern amenities while placing guests in the heart of the wild countryside.
The beautiful and extremely diverse land of the Alpujarras ranges from pine forests and alpine meadows, wooded valleys and gorges, to almond, olive and orange groves. The flora and fauna will change depending the season, but is always spectacular.
The fresh air, the natural environment and the magnificent Sierra Nevada Mountains draw visitors, who also flock from afar to sample the water, which is said to contain minerals for eternal youth… not a bad addition to a holiday!
