Sensory overload on a perfume course in the Languedoc

I’ve just returned from a weekend perfume course in the beautiful Languedoc region of Southern France where my nose doesn’t know what’s hit it. Janey Lee Grace who is Steve Wright’s co presenter on BBC Radio 2 also did the perfume course and loved it so much she recommended it on Radio 2 yesterday to all her listeners.

If you want to know about top notes, the sustaining heart and the long lasting base notes not to mention their effects on your mood and wellbeing then ask away. After smelling over 50 different essential oils my left, right and limbic brains are in overdrive.

Janey’s perfume creation was so much better than mine and according to our Alchemist tutor Petre, Janey had created a strong aphrodisiac – look out Mr Lee Grace! Sadly my creation was not so good, for some reason my choice of essential oils when combined smelt very ‘manly’, I blame the sandalwood base notes (and thanks to the Apprentice, there was no way I was confusing my Sandalwood from the cheaper cedarwood) but after a few hours of tweaking under the watchful eye of Petre and Jenny who was also guiding us I finally came up with something wonderful, even to my untrained ‘nez’.

The perfumery course takes place in a gorgeous old French house set deep in a valley surrounded by plants, wild flowers and lush green trees and the best bit… there’s no mobile phone reception.

We ate well, drank amazing organic wine from the Languedoc region and by the end of the weekend, thanks to our fabulous teachers, we smelt great too.

Highly recommended to anyone looking for an inspiring, relaxing weekend where you’ll feel like you’ve been away for weeks not a weekend and will return home with a deep insight into the power of plants as well as the skills to create your own signature scents (maybe I’ll start a range of aftershaves?!).
