A pick of the best resorts to learn to ski

Fancy learning to ski but a little lost for choice of where to go? Fear not, help is at hand from our friends at Erna Low Ski Holidays who have rounded up the best resorts to kick start your career in skiing… You’ll be at the next winter Olympics in no time !

La Plagne – A hugely popular choice for families, ski holidays to La Plagne provide an extensive range of green and blue wide open runs to safely practice on without being hassled by the speed demons all competing for valuable space. La Plagne is actually spread across 10 villages and high altitude resorts with most of them offering convenient ski in, ski out access which is a huge benefit when you are learning how to walk in ski boots! Oxygene ski school have English speaking classes and offering competitive rates compared to the established Ecole de Ski Francais (ESF).

Flaine – Due to its ideal position at the bottom of a bowl, Flaine is another popular choice for beginners and learning families as its location means you cannot fail to get safely home at the end of the day’s ‘exploring’. With the majority slopes being south facing, it can make all the difference to learn in the sun, n’est ce pas?

Les Arcs – Linked to neighbouring La Plagne to make up a large area of Paradiski of over 425km of pistes, Les Arcs provides some varied skiing to suit all levels making it a good destination if you have a mixed group of abilities. Stick to the tree lined slopes of the pretty village of Peisey Vallandry or head up to the higher blue runs to check out the scenery and the unique architecture of the Arc 1800 ski property. We can recommend staying in one of the recently completed Arc 1950 properties. Being totally ski in, ski out and fully pedestrianised, the village provides a relaxed and safe environment for those first Bambi steps on skis!

Morzine and Les Gets – These two resorts form part of the huge Portes de Soleil ski area which stretches over into Switzerland and are another great option if you are looking for somewhere with plenty of variety. If heading on a ski holiday to Morzine as a beginner, stick to the Morzine / Les Gets side of the mountain as the slopes are less busy and will lead all the way home rather than having to take a bus or gondola down from the rest of the resort. There are plenty of nursery slopes but we recommend avoiding school holidays. As its only an hour from Geneva airport, weekend trips are a good option to give yourself a taste!

Serre Chevalier – A relatively unknown resort on the British market, Serre Chevalier is a great choice for those wishing to learn in peace and with a reputation as the ‘sunniest resort’ in the Alps, skiing in Serre Che is all the more enjoyable. Don’t believe that this is small area though; Serre Chevalier has over 225km of slopes spread over 4 villages and even reaches the UNESCO town of Briancon. Plenty of rest is essential while learning to ski and therefore we can fully recommend a trip to the newly opened Grand Bains at Monetier – a huge spa spread over numerous levels. Just the way to reward those tired muscles!
